I did this ride in July 2025. Enjoyed it but (as Jack makes very clear in the book) please note that a LOT of this ride is on unsurfaced forest track. Very stony and you need big tyres and a sense of adventure to enjoy it. I had neither, being honest, both of which is down to me! I was on a gravel bike with decent tyres, but this is a rough ride and I felt I had to nurse the bike along many miles of bumpy, slow, very stony track. One tip for other riders: having done 9 miles of this sort of difficult riding, at the top corner you can easily hop on to the A68 and avoid the final forest track. An A-road it may be, but you’re in Northumberland and it was quiet, scenic, and the JOY of feeling smooth tarmac under the tyres was amazing!
I also (owing to lack of time) had to take the road to the south of the reservoir, not the path along the northern shore. But I will be back with a mountain bike, with suspension, and do this ride properly one day!
