  1. This is a glorious route with vast, sweeping, open moors that goes right to the edge of Scotland. Jack lists is as “moderate”. I would say Moderate +” as I found it challenging.

    1. Hi Amory
It’s so tricky with these ratings. There are only four – easy, moderate, challenging and very challenging – and they are relative to other rides in the book and calculated based on distance and elevation. I suppose I could have used *** symbols instead, because it’s a bit unfair to describe any route as “easy”, especially routes in Northern England, where it’s hard to avoid the hills.
      Jack

  2. We completed the rote yesterday and I agree with Amory .. a brilliant cycle route but definitely edging towards ‘challenging’ rather than ‘moderate’. We saw no other vehicles or cyclists for miles and miles. View spectacular. Nicky

  3. Another great route by Jack Thurston. It gets into some really remote countryside with excellent scenery. The day I rode was somewhat grey and blustery but the ride was still great. There are a couple of tough climbs on the route in particular where the public road ends, and you climb up onto the moor on the MoD road. The climb out of Elsdon is also quite long but not nearly as steep.

I was on holiday in Longframlington and so I rode from there, joining the ride just after Hepple, adding another 26 miles in total, making it into a superb day out :-). The back road from Hepple to Rothbury (along the south side of the valley) is another great lane to ride.

I would recommend the Bird in Bush Inn & Coffee Shop in Elsdon for food and drink. Unfortunately the famous Impromptu Cafe in Elsdon (opened in 1978) has now shut up shop. However the Bird in Bush is very welcoming to cyclists and includes some cyclist memorabilia inside. It also does a good value and suitably filling ‘cyclist special’.
