    Hi Jack

I rode this yesterday starting from my home town of Southwell, the 645 goes directly into Sherwood Pines so it was perfect. Maybe you stopped by here when doing your research but if you didn’t it’s always worth a detour. Plus we have one of the best pubs in the county this end of the trail!

It might be helpful to add that a small section of this ride has been closed since January. The MOD are working on something around mile marker 29 and it doesn’t seem to be reopening any time soon. The diversion signs that had been there weren’t when I rode on Wednesday. When you get to the metal fencing turn right up the sandy track, then left and left again. This rejoins the route avoiding the closed section.

  3. I have been doing a variation of this route from Worksop for a long time. Here are a few suggested variations:
    1. At mile 13 go right after Bothamsall and join the River Maun sooner. You pass what is locally called Robin Hood’s Cave.
    2. At mile 33 in Norton it is worth trespassing? onto RHW onto Welbeck Estate. This leads you past a field with a herd of white deer and at Holbeck it is worth visiting St Winifred’s Church to see the grave of Lady Ottoline Morrell who was the inspiration for Hermione Roddice in D H Lawrence’s Women in Love and possibly Lady Chatterley!
I would also recommend a coffee and scone/cake stop at Creswell Crags Visitors Centre.

  4. Although there is a picture of it in the book you may miss Archway House at mile 27. It is a magnificent building with a noted history and is now in private hands. There is a display board on the track ( Sustrans Route 6) outside giving it’s interesting history.

  5. Road this one today. Great route. Really enjoyed it. For some reason though, the last 7 miles seemed to be missing from the tcx download on my wahoo. Downloaded the gpx to finish off and that was fine though.

  6. Amazing ride today. More tree lined avenues (and “no entry” signs than you can shake a stick at.
All open today – MOD must have finished their work. I’d personal advise missing out the path by the River Maun – it’s very muddy and then very sandy in quick succession. My wheels felt like they were being prepared for a deep fat fryer… Had to stop and scoop out the mud guards!
