  1. I have failed to directly transfer the route file for No. 24 Small is Beautiful. to my Garmin Edge Explore. I was able to download the .GPX file to my iPad and to my Windows PC but when it came to transferring the file to Garmin Connect it simply would not work. I also tried downloading the route as a .FIT file it that wouldn’t work either. The way I worked around the problem was to download to Komoot then use the Komoot app on my Garmin Edge. It seems to have worked successfully, hopefully the guidance instructions etc will have copied across correctly.

I have to say that the quality and presentation of the book “Lost Lanes Central” is of the highest order. This is the best of my cycling guide books.

    1. Hi Mick – Sorry to hear about this. I tried uploading the GPX from the Lost Lanes website into Garmin Connect (menu: Training > Courses > Import) and it worked fine. As I don’t have a Garmin GPS device I can’t try uploading it to that but I assume once it’s been accepted into Garmin Connect it should work OK.

  2. Hi Jack. Really want to try this but I’m a bit intimidated because it is down as “hard” in the book! Why is it considered hard? Is it just the distance or is it because of the ups and downs? Any tips on making it easier?

    1. Largely because of the distance and the amount of off-road on the trail beside Rutland Water – off-road miles count double for time and effort, I reckon. It’s rolling countryside, but not really hilly. You could make it shorter by cutting off the bit from and to Oakham, i.e. start and finish at Manton. But ride difficulty is all relative – only you know whether the distance is manageable for you in the time you have available. Hope that helps!

      1. Thanks so much for the advice! I think I’ll do it with an overnighter in Oundle. Shame to miss out the ospreys at Rutland water, though.

  3. This is the 10th route of done from the book so far. I do a lot of cycling and hiking and never thought to visit this part of the UK before. This and the route from Chesterfield are my 2 favourite routes so far despite riding 2 in the Peaks and one in the Cotswolds. What an incredibly beautiful and underrated part of the country this is.
