Ridden on 21st April, 2016 – my first Welsh lost lane. I used the small car-park in Green Street, Holt as my start point but otherwise kept to the route other than taking a less than ideal route through the one-way system in Chester thanks to a struggling Garmin. I registered 68.5km with 600m of elevation gain.
This was a lovely introduction to Cheshire thanks to the undulating countryside littered with red sandstone houses and the fascinating packhorse bridges. True to the route’s description the cobbled section in the woods was un-ridable on my 23mm tyres even though they’d conquered many of the Belgian cobbled hills last year.
“Gair i’r gall” – the Chocolate and Guinness cake at Cleopatra’s Coffee Shop in Holt is great but perhaps best kept until after the ride.
I did this from Tarporley, omitting the trip into Chester which I am saving for another day. I enjoyed the scenery on the Peckforton Hills section. I’ve done the cobbled climb before on a mountain bike but it was
a lot tougher on 25mm road tyres. The descent on the other side was fun, however. Coffee and cake in Farndon then a nice run over the cobbled bridges at Hockenhull Platts (a listed building) and a bit of a climb back towards Tarporley. An enjoyable ride that I might do again one day.
Thanks for yet another excellent Lost Lanes route – how do you find these gems? This was the first route from the Wales book; the others I have done are listed in the North book. Looking forward to LL Central England publication.
We set off from a camp site near Cheshire Oaks and followed the canal down to Chester before starting the route proper from the station. Using gravel bikes with 38 mm tyres proved ideal, but I still struggled on the wet / greasy cobbles section. Good cafe stop in Tarporley, beautiful varied route and amazing geology and villages. The canal basin in Chester is worth a visit too if you like industrial architecture and transport
Interesting ride. I did this on 30th June 2024, with my partner. I rode a hybrid with Land Ranger tyres, and Sylvia rode an ebike Raleigh Array with Land Ranger tyres. We found it to be a good ride, a bit hillier than we expected, and neither of us made it up the cobbeld hill at Peckforton, although I gave it a good go. Next time, maybe! Thanks for the route Jack, we both enjoyed it.
