I really want to do a ride in Cannock Chase but can’t figure out anywhere to stay! Any suggestions for (non-camping) accommodation?
Depends on how you’re getting there; your best bet for somewhere close to the Chase is probably the Travelodge or Premier Inn in Rugeley, both of which are close to Rugeley Trent Valley railway station. There are B&Bs in Milford and Great Haywood villages as well. Or if doing this route, there’s lots of options in Lichfield.
I did this route both in October ’23 and Feb ’24. Had to divert a few times due to flooding once the route got close to the Trent. Would not advise doing this route after heavy rainfall as the flooding can be bad in the Trent Valley. Affected sections were (1) between Colton & Colwich and (2) around Alrewas.
No issues once the route climbs onto Cannock Chase.
Gorse Lane shut to all traffic, inc walkers and cyclists. possible to get through-without moving barriers- just about but watch out for barbed wire
Diversion is possible by going 1/2 mile East, then North over canal and then West to rejoin route after 1/2 a mile. Adds about 1.5 miles.
Great ride. Did this today on a 15 year old hybrid, no trouble at all. Started in Cannock Chase, and went from there. Great little cafe in Abbots Bromley, The Antlers Coffeehouse. GPS spot on. It’s in Staffordshire, so some of the locals are a bit aggressive, so be careful, especially on the canal towpath, but apart from that, really good ride.
