Hi Jack,
I’ve just bought your book “Lost Lanes North” and realised when looking at the No. 16 “The Way of the Wolds” that I had actually cycled on part of your route weeks previously near Wheldrake . On the road (passing Spring House Farm) I turned back when I got to a bridleway with a “Private Road” sign going to Sheepwalk Farm (near to the North Selby Coal Mine track). Could you advise me what you do re signs like this?
Will I be able to cycle down the Sheepwalk Farm road even though it says Private?
Many thanks and love the book by the way,
Jane (McArthur)
i have cycled this route today, including the section past sheepwalk farm (new road). this is not a private road as far as i could see.

Thank you Adrian. I’m looking forward to doing this route too, Jane
As you can see from the OS map there’s a public bridleway along this road (dashed red line on the map). That means it’s permitted to walk, cycle or ride a horse. As you note, it’s a private road, so it’s not permitted to drive a motor vehicle. Hope that helps!
Thanks Jack. I’ve completed the route thanks to your reply,
many thanks,
jane
My husband and I did this route in September 2020 and thoroughly enjoyed it. We ended up making it a 2-day adventure by staying overnight in Pocklington at the Kilnwick Percy Resort hotel, which in hindsight probably wasn’t necessary as the second day was very easy but we certainly enjoyed our adventure.
Enjoyable spin along this route today. The dry Wold valleys around Thixendale were charming, so thank you Jack for this introduction. Three sections of the cyclepaths towards the end of the route are currently closed whilst undergoing renovation. There are obvious and short diversions to get back on track. Liked the segment through the race course. On race day this would need another detour but I’m sure that would be equally obvious.
