  1. Rode most of this today. Got the train to Dorking and did the loop excluding Box Hill and the bit to and from Effingham Junction. It was absolutely glorious.

Just one word of caution: there was about 4km of road re-surfacing work going on between Coldharbour and Dorking. We didn’t fancy the diversion, so we rode cautiously on the loose stones (gravĂ©!?), despite vociferous encouragement from the workmen to go faster. It was OK but not the lovely fast, smooth descent it should have been and will be again once the work is done.

  2. I cycled this route this afternoon and it was superb. Really hard work but very rewarding with some amazing views. I did it on fat mb tyres so managed to nip up to the top of Leith Hill as well for a cup of tea and a slice of cake. I will be doing it again soon. Thanks to my brother for giving me the book!

  3. Did this ride today which was great – there is flooding over the road between mile 3-4, sign says road closed but you can get through although your feet will get wet (and thus cold). No way to walk around it. Also massive flooding just before you get to Box Hill train station, again can’t walk through it and feet will get wet, it did something nasty to my back brake but fortunately there is a (great) bike shop at the train station just down the road who fixed it up quickly for me. The train station is also a good way back to London if you don’t want to retrace your steps for the last part, I used the same train ticket although not sure if that is legal or not (but no-one was checking). Also would recommend anyone going up to Leith Tower doesn’t stop at the first carpark, keep going to the next one (which is on the route, a bit after the turn to coldharbour) because from there you can do a shorter (0.25 mile) walk to the tower rather than doing the 0.75 mile gentle walk from the first car park (which you can ride most of, depending how fat your tyres are and tolerance for mud and rocks). Enjoy!

  4. many thanks Judy, I was looking to do this tomorrow (Mon) so very handy to know about the flooding, can route around that!

  5. Hi – I’ve downloaded the GPX file and find it has invalid altitude data after about 40km – just drops to a flat 0m for rest of ride. Have tried downloading it several times, but seems to have mapping OK, just appears altitude is a problem.

  6. Yes, I found the same problem yesterday which also stopped my Garmin Edge Touring giving navigation instructions after that point. I was wondering if it was a glitch in the gpx file or my devise.

Anyway, great ride apart from my gear cable snapping at the the top of Box Hill. I recommend Pilgrims Cycles right next to Box Hill station who fixed my cable for me so I could finish the ride.

  7. Very tough one, make sure you take enough food to fuel yourself for those climbs. Some really lovely quiet roads though.

Might be worth taking a lock so you can leave your bikes at the car park and nip up to Leith Hill Tower for some stunning views. Got a puncture at the top though and my pump broke – nightmare! Luckily the coffee shop was open which lessened the blow while I waited for a cyclist to save me.

This is a lovely ride. I stated near Shere and skipped Box Hill due to time constraints. I really loved the section over Ranmore Common, as well the choice of roads that avoided traffic.
