Icknield Street is busy with motor traffic which tends to speed along this straight Roman road. Better to turn right at Welford, then left to Dorsington, Pebworth and Honeybourne.
An quieter alternative return from Ilmington: north to Wimpstone, Preston-on-Stour and Atherstone-on-Stour.
Thanks Chris, always good to have a comment based on local knowledge. I can see that that road could get fast, so I think your route out via Dorsington, Pebworth and Honeybourne makes sense.
