Ridden on 18th May 2016 my ninth Lost Lanes Wales.
I rode from the car-park at Corse Lawn House Hotel (on the B4211 north of Hartpury) and stayed on for a post-ride lunch. This could also make an over-night stop for anyone who fancies the full English country house hotel experience! I took a mostly lanesy route into Gloucester, via Norton and Longlevens, picking up the cycle-track which goes past the cathedral to join the published route at the docks. I rode 83km with 640m of elevation gain. Note that when I rode, the cycle track out of Gloucester was closed shortly before arriving at Maisemore Bridge due to some unsafe wooden bridges. You’ll need to join the A417 slightly early to avoid this section.
In late-May I was too late for the daffodils so had to make do with cow-parsley instead! Despite that, this is still a lovely lanesy ride – though the rather soggy, slippery grassy towpath along the remains of the Hereford & Gloucester canal at Oxenhall (past the old lock-keeper’s cottage) came as a bit of a surprise. The somewhat overgrown footpath to regain Horsefair Lane also took some finding.
“Gair i’r gall” – Don’t miss St Mary’s Church at Kempley! It’ll add around 3km to the ride but the medieval frescoes are stunning and are visited by people from far and wide – as witnessed by the bus-load of Welsh tourists I found filling the pews on my arrival! The other two St. Mary’s on the route (at Hartpury and Upleadon Court) are also well worth visiting.
Hello
We are planning to do the Daffodil Dreaming ride over the bank holiday weekend – are the .PDF route directions available?
Many thanks
Hannah
Hi Hannah
The original directions sheet went missing, not sure how that happened! But I’ve updated with a new directions sheet.
Enjoy the ride!
I did this ride yesterday and enjoyed it. Gloucester Docks are interesting and the lanes thereafter are really quiet, with only a couple of brief stretches on busier roads. The Beauchamp Arms does a very nice Sunday lunch, including veggie options. It was interesting to take time off the bike to explore Hartpury’s historical buildings and rare pear trees. I’d love to come back to walk the Daffodil way in spring. This is a beautiful, hidden away area.
